An independent consultancy for UK businesses

Clear advice. Practical improvements. No unnecessary complexity.

What Milner Consulting does

Milner Consulting is an independent UK technology and cybersecurity consultancy, founded and run by Bradley Milner. It works with small and medium-sized businesses on security, Microsoft 365, cloud operations and automation.

Most SMEs are not short of technology. They are short of time to work out which parts of it are a problem. Security guidance written for large organisations rarely survives contact with a fifteen-person business — the controls assume a team that does not exist, and the language assumes a specialist reading it.

The approach here is narrower and more useful: find the handful of things that genuinely carry risk, explain why they matter in business terms, and help put them right in an order that makes sense. Where a piece of work is not needed, say so.

The Cybersecurity & AI Risk Assessment came out of that. It is a structured way to establish where a business actually stands, so the conversation that follows is about evidence and priorities rather than assumptions.

How the work is approached

Four things that shape every engagement

Explain, do not mystify

Security advice that cannot be explained to a non-technical director is not finished. If a recommendation cannot be justified in plain terms, it probably is not the right recommendation.

Fix what matters first

Long lists of findings are easy to produce and hard to act on. The work is deciding what genuinely carries risk for your business, and putting it in order.

Be honest about limits

A questionnaire is not an audit, and a readiness indicator is not a certificate. Being precise about what a piece of work does and does not prove is part of doing it properly.

Leave you better off without me

The goal is a business that understands its own position, not a dependency. Documentation, handover and explanation are part of the job.

Start with an assessment

It is the most direct way to establish what is worth doing, and in what order.
